I’ve had such a fun project on my hook this month! My Retro Doily Rug has a fresh new look thanks to a recent pattern update, and I’m absolutely delighted with how it turned out. This was actually my first time using 100% cotton yarn for an area rug, and I fell in love with the final texture and drape.
For this version, I used Dishie Cones by KnitPicks, which made it incredibly easy to crochet while holding multiple strands together. The updated pattern has now been fully tested, edited, and released as an individual design... it’s no longer part of the Owl Rug pattern.

Yarn & Construction
The Retro Doily Rug is made using three strands of yarn from the same cone, a technique I describe in detail in my Long Chain Method post. It’s simple, efficient, and perfect for creating a super‑bulky weight without buying specialty yarn.
You’ll need:
If using Dishie Cones (400 g):
• 3 cones total
• 1 × Creme Brulé
• 1 × Silver
• 1 × Swan
If using Dishie Skeins (100 g):
• 12 skeins total
• 4 of each color (choose any 3 colors you love)
Working with cotton gives the rug a beautiful structure and a clean, retro feel, perfect for adding a stylish accent to your home.

A Fresh Retro Accent for Your Space
This super‑bulky crochet doily rug makes a charming statement piece in any room. Whether you place it in your entryway, living room, or craft space, it brings a lovely touch of vintage flair.
