Even though it was the middle of January, my instincts pulled me straight into summer. That’s how the Ananas Comosus Pineapple Rug came to life - a bright, cheerful design that instantly brings sunshine into any space. Whether you place it in your kitchen, patio, playroom, or even pack it along for a picnic, this rug adds a fun tropical touch wherever it goes.

About the Design
The rug is worked seamlessly from the bottom up using three strands of Bernat Premium yarn held together (Gold and Spring Green). Each strand is medium weight (4), but when combined, they create a super‑bulky (6) thickness that works up beautifully.
If you’ve never crocheted with multiple strands before, don’t worry, it’s easier than it looks. I have a helpful video showing how to pull three strands from a single skein, and once you try it, you’ll see how simple and satisfying it is.

Techniques That Make It Shine
The diamond pattern in the rug is created using the Filet Crochet technique, which combines double crochet stitches and chain spaces to form open and solid meshes. It gives the rug a lovely texture and structure without being overly complicated.
For the leafy top, the pineapple stitch worked out perfectly. I was so happy with how the shapes and textures came together. Like most pineapple‑stitch projects, a bit of blocking helps everything settle nicely, but you only need partial Spray Blocking, not a full wet block.

Finishing Options
If you’d like extra stability, you can finish your rug with a removable non‑slip lining. I have a full tutorial for that on the blog, and it’s a great option if your rug will be used on smooth floors.
Made With Love by Our Testing Team
I’m thrilled to share a few beautiful examples made by our wonderful testing team: Cynthia Fuller, Jazz Abd, Katie Bailey, Melinda Dickie, and Nikki Williams. Their versions turned out amazing, and I can’t wait to see yours too.
I hope you enjoy making the Ananas Comosus Pineapple Rug as much as I enjoyed designing it. It’s a little burst of summer you can enjoy any time of year.
