Did you know you can transfer pattern markings without using a tracing wheel or carbon paper? This simple pin‑marking method works beautifully for notches, straight darts, pocket placements, appliqué positions, animal eyes, and many other small details.
What You’ll Need
- Fabric
- Pattern
- Cutting mat
- Straight pins
- Marking utensil
Note: Always test your marking tool before using it on your project. For marks on the right side of the fabric, choose an erasable option. In this tutorial, I used a Pilot Frixion Clicker heat‑erasable pen.
Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric and Pattern
Place your fabric on a cutting mat to protect your work surface. Position the pattern piece on the fabric as usual, pin it in place, and trace around the outer edges with your marking utensil.
Step 2: Transfer the Markings
Now it’s time to transfer the important points, such as notches, corners, and dart tips.
- Insert a pin straight through the marking on the pattern and into the fabric, making sure the pattern edges still line up with your traced outline.
- Carefully lift the edge of the pattern and place a small dot exactly where the pin enters the fabric.
- Repeat for all remaining markings.
- Remove the pins and lift the pattern away.
Step 3: Connect Straight Lines (If Needed)
For darts or other shapes with straight edges, simply mark each corner using the pin method. Then remove the pattern and use a ruler to connect the dots.
Note: This technique is excellent for straight lines and points, but it’s not ideal for transferring long curved lines.
