This is Buddy, the heart and soul of our family. He’s a 14‑year‑old wire‑haired Jack Russell Terrier with a huge personality and an even bigger heart.
When he was younger, his energy was endless. He could run, jump, and play from morning to night. Now that he’s a senior and moves at a slower pace, our slippery hardwood floors have become a challenge for him. So I decided to make a long floor runner to help keep our sweet Bud safe, and it makes me so happy to see how much he enjoys it.

This design is incredibly special to me, and I hope it brings comfort and joy to your own fur babies as well. The Pawesome Floor Runner pattern includes two sizes, and it’s easy to customize by adding or removing blocks.
- Small Rug: 34″ × 24″ (1 block)
- Floor Runner: 34″ × 168″ (7 blocks)
For accurate cutting, I recommend using a 60‑degree ruler with at least one trimmed corner. If you don’t have one, you can print the corner‑trimming template included in the pattern. Here are a few great ruler options:
- Easy Point Trimmers
- Hex N More Ruler
- Creative Grids 60‑Degree Triangle Ruler
In the photo below, I’m using the Hex N More Ruler by Jaybird Quilts.

Fabric Choices
I loved working with Tula Pink fabrics for this project... the colors are vibrant, playful, and perfect for a pet‑themed design. Here’s what I used for Buddy’s runner:
- PAWS: Tula Pink Designer Essentials - 1 Jelly Roll or ¼ yd of each tone/color (2 dark + 2 light tones of 7 colors)
- BACKGROUND: Linework Mineral Paper – 5 yds
- BINDING: Linework Mineral Paper – 1 yd
- BACKING: Homemade Busy Fingers Night – 5 yds

Quilting
I quilted the runner with straight lines using a straight‑edge quilting ruler, but you can easily achieve the same look with a walking foot on a domestic sewing machine. This project is very approachable... confident beginners can absolutely make it.
