Smile, spin, and let the wind carry you. I recently made this Pinwheel Mug Rug for our MQG Paint Chip Challenge, and I would be absolutely thrilled if you made one too. The idea is simple and so much fun: choose three paint chips with color names that match your initials, then pull fabrics that match those colors as closely as possible. One Jelly Roll strip per color is all you need.
To match my paint chips, I used a mix of Kona, Tula Pink, and Northcott fabrics, paired with beautiful Aurifil 50wt cotton threads.

About the Pattern
This is a beginner‑friendly project with simple cuts and easy assembly. You’ll make 14 half‑hexies, traditionally pieced with no y‑seams. The pattern includes:
- Step‑by‑step photos
- Quilting diagrams
- Optional printable templates
If you’re new to quilting (or just curious about trying one of my patterns) this cheerful little pinwheel is a perfect place to start.

Cutting Half‑Hexies (Isosceles Trapezoids)
Here’s a short video showing how to cut half‑hexies using a corner trimmer. It’s quick, clean, and easy‑peasy.
A Little Story…
There’s always time for a good glass of wine, especially when you’re having fun sewing. I made my very first “winey” pinwheel on New Year’s Eve, happily stitching away with a glass beside me. I was so excited to see it come together that I didn’t notice a mistake until it was far too late for a seam ripper.
Instead of tossing it aside, I highlighted the mistake with a tiny appliqué and turned it into a special memory... because some moments deserve to be celebrated, not undone.
Better an “oops” than a “What if”
