Non-Slip Lining For Quilted Rugs

Non-Slip Lining For Quilted Rugs

A removable rug lining is ideal for quilted rugs as you can wash and dry the rug and the liner separately, avoiding any risk of melting synthetic materials or dealing with uneven shrinkage. The simplest option is to cut a rectangle from a rug pad and place it underneath your quilted rug. If you want extra security, you can attach the corners with adhesive hook‑and‑loop tape so the liner stays perfectly in place.

Long runners can get expensive if you try to buy a rug pad in the exact size you need. Most pads come in standard shapes, and custom sizes can be hard to find. When I needed a 14′‑long liner for The Pawesome Floor Runner, I realized it was far more affordable to buy a smaller pad and reshape it with a little sewing.

I purchased a 5′ × 7′ Non‑Slip Rug Pad Gripper, cut it in half lengthwise to create two 2.5′ × 7′ pieces, and then joined them together across the short ends using leftover bias binding. The result is - perfectly sized 2.5′ × 14′ non‑slip liner.

Sewing Tips

  • You may want to use a walking foot, as the grippy texture can be difficult to feed through the machine.
  • In the video below, the stitching is sped up, but I actually sewed slowly using a regular foot and gently guided the pad through the feed dogs with my hands.
  • You’ll only need two seams (one on each side of the folded binding strip) to join the pieces securely.
