Slip Stitch Joining – Not As You Go

Slip Stitch Joining – Not As You Go

Here are two of my favorite methods for joining crochet motifs with a slip stitch. Unlike join‑as‑you‑go techniques, these methods allow you to finish all motifs individually first, then seam them together afterward. Both create clean, sturdy joins with distinct visual effects.

Ridged Slip Stitch Joining

This is the simplest and most common slip‑stitch seaming method. It’s quick, beginner‑friendly, and creates a decorative ridge on the right side of the work.

How to Work the Ridged Slip Stitch Join

  1. Hold the two crochet pieces wrong sides together.
  2. Use stitch markers to mark the first and last stitches.
  3. Join yarn in the first stitch of both pieces.
  4. Slip stitch through the corresponding stitches, inserting the hook through the back loops only (BLO) of each piece at the same time.
  5. Continue across, ending in the last stitch of both pieces.
  6. Fasten off.

This creates a raised, textured seam that adds definition and structure.

Flat Slip Stitch Joining

This method joins motifs side by side, rather than stacking them wrong sides together. The result is a beautiful, braided‑looking seam that lies flat on the right side.

How to Work the Flat Slip Stitch Join

  1. Lay the two motifs side by side.
  2. Mark the first and last stitches on both pieces.
  3. Insert your hook under the top two loops of the first stitch on the left motif and slip stitch.
  4. Insert your hook under the top two loops of the first stitch on the right motif and slip stitch.
  5. Continue alternating:
    - Slip stitch in the next stitch on the left
    - Slip stitch in the next stitch on the right
  6. End with the last stitch on the left, then the last stitch on the right.
  7. Fasten off.
