Crochet Crocodile Stitch (also known as the Dragon Scale Stitch) creates a fun, textured look that mimics layered scales. You can arrange the scales in an offset layout or stack them in straight rows, depending on the pattern. Here’s how to work a single scale in Crocodile Stitch.
How to Crochet a Scale
With the right side facing, work 12 dc around the dc‑posts of the V‑st.

Top Half of the Scale
Work from the top down: 6 dc around the post of the first dc.

Bottom Half of the Scale
Work from the bottom up: 6 dc around the post of the second dc.

You can see this stitch in action in my Amber the Fancy Goldfish Hat pattern... it’s a perfect project for showing off these playful scales.
