The Double Chain Easy Cord (D‑ch) is one of my favorite techniques. It’s quick, sturdy, and incredibly versatile. You can use it for ties, belts, drawstrings, or even as a foundation cord to begin a project.
How to Make a Double Chain Cord
- Leave a long yarn tail at the beginning, about 3× the length of your desired cord.
- Make a slip knot to form your first chain.
- Wrap the working yarn around your index finger, then bring the tail over the hook from front to back (you’ll have 2 loops on the hook).
- Holding the bottom of the cord between your thumb and middle finger, yarn over with the working yarn and pull it through both loops on the hook (1 loop remains)
- Repeat Steps 3–4 until your cord reaches the length you want. This creates a smooth, even cord that looks beautiful from every angle.

Why I Love Using It as a Foundation
A Double Chain foundation keeps your project edge:
- Straight
- Even
- Flexible
It’s especially helpful when you’re unsure how long your starting tail should be. In that case, simply begin with two strands held together - one from the inside of the ball and one from the outside. After finishing the cord, continue your project with one working strand and drop the extra end.
