I love incorporating traditional lace into modern designs, using classic motifs and techniques as inspiration. I began designing dresses and parasols in 2005, and over the years I’ve continued refining my craft to create pieces that feel both timeless and contemporary.

Creating a Modern Design Using Traditional Elements
A parasol is essentially a large doily... but instead of lying flat, the lace stretches into a beautiful dome. When the frame opens, the lace forms a rounded canopy that showcases every stitch.
The parasol shown here is made using my Pineapple Lace Parasol Pattern, worked with:
- Size 10 cotton thread\
- 2.25 mm steel hook
Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread is an excellent choice for this project.

Using a Basic Umbrella Frame
The structure of the parasol comes from a simple stick umbrella. Just remove the original fabric cover (as demonstrated in my video) and replace it with your finished crochet lace. This gives you a sturdy, functional frame while allowing your handmade lace to shine.

A Helpful Finishing Trick
Over time, woven‑in yarn ends can loosen, especially in lace projects that are stretched over a frame. To prevent this:
- Apply a small amount of fabric glue to each woven end after securing it.
- Allow the glue to dry completely before using your parasol.
I recommend Liquid Stitch. It's white but dries clear, leaving your work neat and secure without altering the look of the lace.
