Grafting Sock Toes with Kitchener Stitch

Grafting Sock Toes with Kitchener Stitch

For a smooth, rounded sock toe without the little “ears,” graft the stitches together using the Kitchener stitch as shown below. This method creates a clean, seamless finish that feels comfortable when worn.

How to Graft with Kitchener Stitch

STEP 1:

Insert the tapestry needle knit‑wise into the first stitch on the front needle and slip that stitch off.

STEP 2:

Pass the needle purl‑wise through the next stitch on the front needle, leaving it in place.

STEP 3:

Insert the needle purl‑wise into the first stitch on the back needle and slip that stitch off.

STEP 4:

Pass the needle knit‑wise through the next stitch on the back needle, leaving it on the needle.

Repeat Steps 1–4 until one stitch remains on each needle. Slip both stitches off and gently tighten the yarn to close the toe. Weave in the end on the wrong side.

TIP: Keep your tension relaxed and aim to match the surrounding stitches rather than pulling the yarn tight.

Once you get the rhythm, Kitchener stitch becomes a smooth, meditative finish for any sock.
