Tips on Creating a Charming Parasol

I love incorporating traditional lace into modern designs, using old motifs and techniques as inspiration. I started designing dresses and parasols in 2005 and have been perfecting my craft ever since.

Parasols are like big doilies; but instead of lying flat, the lace creates a dome shape. When extended, it forms a rounded canopy. This lace is finished using my Pineapple Lace Parasol Pattern. You will need size 10 cotton thread and a 2.25 mm  steel hook. Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread is a great choice.

The mechanism is from a basic stick umbrella, just remove the fabric cover as shown in my video and add your crochet lace instead.

I have another little trick to share. Over time, the woven yarn ends may become loose and will eventually pull out. To prevent this, apply a small amount of fabric glue to the yarn ends after weaving them. Ensure that the glue has fully dried before using your parasol. I recommend using Liquid Stitch as it initially appears white upon application but becomes transparent once dry.

Here is another parasol pattern I designed in a smaller size - Victorian Goth Steampunk Lace Parasol.
